There is a difference between exclusivity and commitment in a relationship. Oftentimes people believe that these things are interlinked. Once you become committed in a relationship you become exclusive but not everyone thinks this way. In order to be in a fully committed relationship, we have to communicate with your partners same goes for exclusivity. Often times you may be dating someone and you two could be happy together but there isn’t any exclusivity outside of your relationship. Here is the difference between exclusivity and commitment.
What is commitment?
Commitment is your partner only choosing you and always you. They are committed to the trials and tribulations you too may go through and they are committed to any plans you two may have. When you are in a committed relationship the chances of you dating somebody else are very slim. Commitment usually equals the seriousness of the relationship it’s something that comes together. It had to be serious about a person and then not commit to them.
What is exclusivity?
Exclusivity is you and your partner being public and everyone knowing that you two are together serious relationship or not. The actual title of boyfriend and girlfriend will be present but the level of commitment to one another might not be. Exclusivity is something that a lot of younger people after The level of commitment is so big and only comes later.
Can you have both commitment and exclusivity?
Yes, this is why people normally work towards it. When you find someone you like and everything has been going well for the first few months or few weeks you become exclusive. Once you have made all sorts of plans and have grown even more fond of each other that’s where commitment starts to play a role. Commitment is something that comes a lot more naturally. The two of you will just feel as though your relationship is at a strong point and you would want to really solidify that.
Can a relationship last without one or the other?
It is one thing for you to be in a committed relationship and not be exclusive and another to be in an exclusive relationship but not be committed. The one with the best chance of surviving is an exclusive relationship with no commitment. it sounds almost absurd but because there is no commitment in the relationship and two people are simply just enjoying each other with no obligations or expectations it is more free-flowing. But when you’re in a committed relationship you feel as though exclusivity is necessary. Often times and committed relationships people change a lot about themselves and what they like or simply adjust their lives to their partners. To do all of that and still not have any exclusivity might affect one of the partners. Unless there is a deep understanding of why there is no commitment and both parties are happy with that the chances of it lasting are very slim.
